Skatepark to open: huge event to mark end of two-year wait
An eagerly awaited skatepark will officially open tomorrow (Saturday).
A single firework will mark the opening of The Tony Tack Memorial Skate Park at 11am - two years after plans for the £112,000 facility were first drafted.
A Skate Jam competition will then be held at the park at noon. The competition will be a chance for young people to show off their skills.
Last month security guards were drafted in to stop people ruining the park before its completion after around 100 young people descended on the facility.
The opening event will include professional skateboard and BMX displays, and a DJ. There will also be a barbecue for all to enjoy and trophies for the winners of the Skate Jam, provided by Southern Water and South East Water who are supporting the event.
The recreational facility was designed after a consultation with residents and young people, to ensure it meet the needs of the community.
