SLIDESHOW: Lewes Annual Bonfire Competition

Waiting for Video...

It took the judges just seven minutes to declare that the stunning beauty Sarah Lewis had retained Ladies Champion Costume at the Annual Bonfire Competition in Lewes on Friday.

Her fabulous Elizabethan gown scored her a quite unprecedented maximum from the six independent judges at the Town Hall and pulled Waterloo up to second place overall.

The Gents Champion Costume was won for Cliffe by Phil Lucas as a terrifying Viking as that society finished third.

Overall winner of the Points Cup was Lewes Borough who had secured 24 points out of the 42 available during the Children’s Classes which proved to be an unassailable lead. The young Gold medallists were Chloe Whittaker, Spencer Funnell, Alex Woollard and siblings Ashley and Belle Mai Heasman.

Borough missed out on the five to nine years classes with Courtney Sibson taking the Girls Gold for Cliffe and Mongol Ashley Reynolds winning for Waterloo.

The Adult Classes commenced with four Golds for Cliffe. To thunderous applause their Vikings secured the prestigious Pioneer Cup and Kia Makepeace retained her title of Best Lady Pioneer. Phil Lucas was adjudged Best Gentleman Pioneer and struck Gold yet again as Imogen Makepeace joined him as they were declared Champion Pair.

Borough’s Tudors secured the Alternative Group Cup and Catherine Barrow was awarded the Ladies Best Fancy Dress. The Gents equivalent went to the impressive Jonathan Tompsett entered as a Roman Soldier by Waterloo.

The Deputy Mayor of Lewes Cllr Ruth O’Keefe distributed the cups with great aplomb although her own society Southover sadly failed to trouble the scorers.
