SLIDESHOW: Seaford’s bonfire parade
Around 500 Bonfire Boys and Girls paraded from Seaford Bonfire Society’s headquarters at the White Lion Pub in Claremont Road, accompanied by three bands and nine local bonfire societies on Saturday October 20.
The procession stopped at Seaford War Memorial in Sutton Park Road, where a wreath was laid to commemorate the fallen of two world wars - many of them being former Bonfire Boys.
Following the Last Post, faultlessly played by John Playford, there was a two minute silence, followed by rendition of Sussex by the Sea.
One of the most popular features of the procession was a boat provided by Seaford And Newhaven Sailing Club containing a Seaford sailor dressed in the grey and purple colours of the Bonfire Society.
As the torch lit parade proceeded to the seafront, the bells of St Leonard’s Church rang out in celebration.
At the fire site on the Martello Fields, in The Esplanade, a large crowd gathered in the rain to witness crosses being burnt to commemorate the Sussex martyrs.
There were also symbols representing England, Canada, Ireland and the West Indies as a tribute to the nations whose troops were stationed in the town during the Great War.
A huge model of the Houses of Parliament was consigned to the flames along with this year’s Enemy of Bonfire, a giant slug.
The large bonfire was also topped with representations of Guy Fawkes.
The reformed society held its first procession and bonfire night last year.
