Slideshow: Seahaven falls silent on Remembrance Day
Thousands of people gathered at war memorials in Seahaven for the annual Remembrance Day commemorations on Sunday November 11.
The beautiful sunny weather helped fuel a big turn out for parades and services.
Wreaths were laid and a two minute silence was observed.
Newhaven was delighted to welcome a contingent from HMS Ranger, the Sussex URNU ship again this year, led by their new lieutenant, Stuart Fletcher.
Newhaven Mayor Graham Amy said: “I was extremely honoured to once again lay a wreath at the town’s memorial to remember all those who died during both World Wars and in more recent conflicts.
“It was particularly lovely to see so many children laying wreaths this year – for all three primary schools in the town, as well as for the sea cadets, air force and army cadets, scouts, guides, cubs and brownies – and even for HM Coastguard.
“It is very important to hand Remembrance down to future generations.”
Peacehaven was able to hold a service at its new war memorial for the first time.
Chairman of the Peacehaven and Telscombe Branch of the Royal British Legion Johan Janse van Vuuren said: “It was the best parade we ever had in Peacehaven with the new route from the police station to the new war memorial.”
The Reverend Ian Cooper conducted the service with the mayors of Peacehaven and Telscombe.
Various organisations laid wreaths and this year a wreath for the Home Guard was laid by Stan Paris whose father was in the Home Guard in Peacehaven.
The wreath for the fallen was laid by Daniel Prior’s brothers.
In Seaford the mayor Linda Wallraven attended the ceremony with the scouts, guides and representatives of the Armed Forces.
Parade marshal Dick McCully led the group up to St Leonard’s Church after the two minute silence for a service by the Reverend Paul Owen.
