Smell of gas along East Sussex coast is due to accidental factory discharge in France
A strong smell of gas detected by residents along the East Sussex coast today (Tuesday January 22) is nothing to worry about, according to Sussex Police.
In fact the odour has wafted over the Channel from a factory in Rouen, France.
The smell is from an additive in the gas which has an unpleasant aroma, but is not toxic and poses no danger to the public.
Sussex Police said it started receiving calls at about 7.30am from members of the public.
Kent Police also received a larger number of calls.
A police spokesperson said: “We understand that this smell emanates from an accidental factory discharge in Rouen, more than 60 miles west of Paris.”
By of 9.15am Sussex Police had received more than 25 calls about the odour.
