SOCCER CLUB HOPES TO LIGHT UP

FOOTBALL supporters are being urged to help top up ground improvement funds so their team can taste the fruits of its success.

Wealden Football Club is near the top of the Sussex County League's second division.

But in spite of a sparkling recent run of play, promotion to the first division will also depend on an upgrade in pitch and spectator facilities.

These will include a second pitch side footpath and floodlighting – for which a substantial grant has already been received.

Total improvement costs are in the region of 37,000 which leaves just 17,000 to be raised.

To qualify for promotion the facilities must be in place by the end of the season.

Club chairman Tom Parker said: 'We accepted a grant this week (20,000 from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund) so it's all systems go but we could do with the support of Express readers to ensure our teams get to play at the level they deserve.'

The club also has four Saturday sides, one under 18 and 12 colts teams.

He added: 'If there's anyone there who can help with sponsorship or fundraising we would be delighted to hear from them.

'You don't get these opportunities very often and we'd like to see our players and teams rewarded for their hard work this season.'
