Sports and games festival to be staged in Seaford

A SPORTS and games festival will be held in Seaford in 2013 after the idea received support at Seaford Community Partnership’s meeting.

Partnership chair Keith Blackburn invited representatives from sporting and voluntary organisations to the meeting on Wednesday (January 11).

Seaford Town Council enthusiastically welcomed the suggestion and put forward ways in which activities or organisation could be involved.

The festival will be held over two weekends in May 2013, possibly Saturday May 18 to Bank Holiday Monday May 27.

Tony Rowswell from the partnership, said: “Seaford Games Tourney was originally started by Seaford Urban District Council in the 1960s and included tennis, bowls, golf and athletics with valuable prizes and entries from all over England in some events.

“It survived local government reorganisation but appears to have fizzled out in the eighties.

“The partnership aims to put sport and healthy living back in the forefront of Seaford life.”

It will provide everything from taster sessions to participant activities to team competitions. Organisers are aiming for the festival to be as inclusive as possible and involve schools, seniors, novices and skilled, the fit, the not so fit and those with disabilities.

Many activities will be based at the Salts, such as tag rugby, net cricket, skateboarding and tennis, but others will take place on the sea, such as kayaking, sailing, wind and kite surfing. There will also be rambling, health walks, Nordic walking and cycling.

Wave Leisure could use the Downs halls and pitches, while Seaford Head swimming pool and sports hall could also provide venues for appropriate activities.

The next meeting of the Partnership on April 4, at 5.30pm at Seaford Baptist Church will consider more detailed plans and set up a management group.

Organisations or clubs interested in taking part, who did not make last week’s meeting, should contact Keith Blackburn beforehand (keithrblackburn@live.co.uk).

Cycle Seahaven will hold a Cycling Festival this year at the Salts on Sunday June 10 from 11am until 4 pm which will include bike maintenance, planned rides and vintage cycles.
