St Dunstan's exhibition at Newhaven Fort

A PERIOD shop recreated by blind ex servicemen and women will open its doors to the public at Newhaven Fort on Saturday August 28.

Pearson's is based on a grocers from the 1940s and was made at craft workshops held at St Dunstan's in Ovingdean.

The special opening at the popular tourist attraction in Fort Road is part of Artwave 2010.

Sarah Jarron, St Dunstan's craft department manager said: "We came up with the concept to recreate a typical grocers from the 1940s to give a snapshot of life during World War II.

"The shop will include a display of a typical meal of the time and the mediocre rations a family would have to live on.

"Everything in the grocers, from the Dig for Victory 3D poster, to the fixtures and fittings have been made by St Dunstaners with assistance from staff in the craft workshop.

"What's really great is that people who visit the shop on the morning of 1 September will be able to meet the St Dunstaner's behind it.

"That includes Wallace Burnet-Smith who flew night planes with 85 Squadron during World War II."

The shop was named after Sir Arthur Pearson, the newspaper magnate who founded St Dunstan's in 1915 and will remain open until September 12.

There will be an adjoining room that provides an educational experience.

The room will include a bust of Winston Churchill, a small wooden spitfire and statues of RAF pilots, as well as paintings of Winston Churchill and an RAF pilot.

Again all made by blind ex-Service men and women in St Dunstan's craft workshop.

There will also be interactive toys, including pieces of a boat inside a box that must be put together through touch rather than sight.
