Stolden garden and church items have been recovered by Lewes Police

A large number of ornaments and other property stolen from Lewes churches and gardens over the past few weeks have been recovered by police.

They are now inviting people who have had similar items stolen to visit and view them.

Some of the property - including candlesticks stolen from the town’s St Pancras Church last month - has already been identified and returned, but other items can be viewed at Lewes Police Station between 10am and 4pm on Sunday, March 3.

Anyone who claims the property will be asked to make a statement and will then be able to take it home.

PCSO Julie Whittaker-Jones said: “If you are worried about having your property stolen from outdoors, there are products available to mark your items with a postcode and your house numbers.

“We also suggest that you take photographs of statues, benches, birdbaths or any other garden ornament you may have, just in case they do go missing in the future.

“On Saturday, March 2, the neighbourhood police team will be joining Lewes District Council and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to security mark property, offer crime prevention and safety advice and discuss any concerns you may have at Newick Community Hall from 10am until 12 noon.

“Then, on Sunday, March 24, PCSO Ella Graham-Scott will be at the Lewes Garden Centre at Kingston to offer advice on garden security and to security mark any property you take along.”

A 29-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from Lewes, were arrested on February 15 on suspicion of theft and going equipped to steal. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. Both have been bailed until March 16.
