Sweet success of scheme is revealed to Seaford congregation

editorial image

A sugar farmer from Malawi visited Seaford on Sunday March 3 to tell people about the success of his Fairtrade co-operative.

Henry Matenda spoke to more than 100 people crowded into Crossway Church in Steyne Road, Seaford, for the annual Fairtrade service, about the difference the Fairtrade premium made to his community.

He explained that when people buy Fairtrade goods, a small premium is paid to the producers.

They decide how this is to be spent and in Henry’s co-operative the premium had been used to buy a tractor, build a school and improve water supplies.

Rose Westwood, minister of Crossway Church, was delighted to welcome Henry and pleased with the size of the congregation.

Members asked Henry questions over Fairtrade tea and coffee after the service.

He was pleased to discover sugar from his co-operative, Kasinthula Cane Growers, could be bought at the Co-operative store in Broad Street.

Henry is pictured with a bag of demerara sugar and Eileen Delaney, Ralph Taylor, Angela Colburn and Tony Delaney froom Seaford Fairtrade Group.
