Swift response to repairs plea about dangerous steps in Pells area of Lewes

ACTION is being taken to repair a dangerous flight of steps giving access to the Pells area of Lewes.

Local residents, including disabled Paul Wilkinson, highlighted thr problem at the steps, which lead from Toronto Terrace to Offham Road.

Local County Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe took up the cause. She found that brickwork was cracking and becoming loose. At a number of points it was coming away from the retaining wall.

Cllr O’Keeffe said: “I contacted the Highways Division of East Sussex County Council and an engineer came to inspect the steps within a week of the request.

“Today [Tuesday] I have been out on site with the local Highways Steward and some of the residents and he has marked up the areas of the steps that need work.

“I am pleased that the response from the County has been so quick on this occasion and I am told that instructions will go to contractors for the work shortly.”

She added that repairs would, hopefully, be made within the next few weeks and ceratinly by the end of October.

Elsewhere, the Friends of Lewes have held a meeting with the Highways Steward to complain about the “unsatisfactory” nature of the surface of Keere Street.

This includes loose bricks and cobbles, which have not been repaired with appropriate materials, and the use of black top or concrete in such an iconic street, the latest newsletter reports.
