Tax freeze to help residents brave
financial climate
Town councillors have responded to residents’ economic concerns by voting to freeze its share of the council tax.
The proposal was mooted during Hailsham Town Council’s Finance & Budget Oversight Committee meeting and accepted by the full council on January 23.
The decision means council tax for a Band D property will remain at £114.69.
The committee was discussing the council tax precept - the amount of money the council receives from the council tax to run the services provided by the Town Council for the year April 2013 to March 2014.
The council’s overall budget stands at £893,119, made up of a precept of £722,306, a £118,794 grant from Wealden District Council (WDC) and the Town Council’s reserves (£52,018).
Finance & Budget Oversight Committee chairman Cllr Chriss Triandafyllou said: “The council is aware that the financial difficulties experienced by local residents as a result of the adverse economic climate still exist.
“So we have worked hard with council officers to review our service delivery through best practice and value for money throughout the past year.”
“For this reason, the council has agreed to freeze its share of the council tax.
Council tax is shared among the town council WDC, East Sussex County Council, the Police Authority and the Fire Service for the services they provide.
