WARTIME evacuees usually involve human beings who have encountered terrible suffering in conflict.

But animals too can experience pain when nations go to battle against other nations.

In Afghanistan there has been more than 300 dogs and cats who have found new homes in the UK and throughout the world, thanks to the hard working efforts of charity Nowzad in Kabul.

Sally Baldwin, aged 51, from Hailsham and a part-time teacher for Laughton Primary School, has been appointed the new ‘adoption co-ordinator’ for the charity.

Many Sussex Express readers will remember Mrs Baldwin’s successful and valiant efforts to bring ‘Brin’, an Afghan stray, back from the front line. Brin was found in 2012 by the British Forces after he barked at a hidden bomb device which would have killed two soldiers clearing a road in Helmand.

He was awarded a PDSA Commendation for Loyalty towards the soldiers in 2011 – and now lives with Mrs Baldwin after her successful campaign to give him a new home here in East Sussex.

Brin has been a visual reminder of animals needing support and. Mrs Baldwin has asked Sussex Express readers to contact her if they are willing to give warzone animals a new home.

Mrs Baldwin told the Sussex Express: “Sometimes, through a general rescue from the surrounding areas in Kabul, we have animals that need a home in the UK. These animals will have spent time at our shelter and will enter the UK fully vaccinated and neutered.

“At present we have one male dog who is looking for a home in the Sussex area and he will be available from the second week of October but there are more in the pipeline. To enable our rescues to leave Afghanistan funding will need to be raised, through our supporters, via Nowzad to the total of £2,500. We ask all those accepted for homing a Nowzad dog to actively play a part in raising funds or which many ideas can be found via our website www.nowzad.com. So, if you are interested in homing a Nowzad rescue please email adoptions@nowzad.com to obtain a form for you to fill in and return.”
