A MANHUNT has been launched to find a man suspected of raping a 13-year-old girl in Hailsham.

The girl reported the rape to police on August 26. She said that a man raped her in an alleyway at 9.30pm eight days earlier on August 18.

She was walking along Black Path approaching another footpath that leads to Chapel Barn Close, according to Sussex Police. Then a man called out her name and grabbed her before she was raped.

DS Dave Bristow said: “Some time had passed before the report was made to us and officers have interviewed the girl and made a number of enquiries.

“The girl has assisted us with an image of the man and we are asking the public to help us identify him.

“If anyone has information they should contact police on 101 quoting OP Blaze, serial 1673 on August 26. They can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Detectives are working with the girl to establish what happened and a full investigation has been launched.

An image of the man they would like to question (see photo) has also been published.

She described the man as white, 25 to 30 years, with brown or ginger hair and he had a dark or brown thick beard. He was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey hoodie with the hood up.

Insp Tony Wakefield said: “Incidents of this type are rare and I would like to reassure the public that we are doing all we can to support this investigation.

“It would appear that the man knew the girl’s name although she does not know him. I would encourage anyone who is concerned or has information to speak to officers.”
