The Diva in Me to be staged at Lewes Little Theatre

Renowned international playwright Charlotte Jones has entrusted the amateur premiere of her play The Diva In Me to the Lewes Little Theatre.

It was originally staged as a single performance at the 2010 Brighton Festival and she fondly recalls the event as “one of those extraordinarily memorable nights in the theatre when the audience is completely on board from the off”.

The play revolves around Philippa, a middle-aged single mother from Coventry who inside is a DIVA. As she tells her story she breaks into song in the manner of her diva of the moment, be it Judy, Billie, Eartha or Amy.

It is a poignant, funny and heart-warming musical and theatrical treat. Joyce Fisher directs and Meg Depla-Lake takes on the hugely challenging role of Phillippa, with Roger Roser at the piano. The play runs from March 9–16 and tickets are available from the Theatre Box Office on 01273 474826.

Elsewhere, a world premiere is taking place at Glyndebourne Opera House next week. Imago is a new community opera – a “La bohème for the Internet-age,” written by Orlando Gough and Stephen Plaice, and directed by Susannah Waters.

Professional singers share the Glyndebourne stage with amateur soloists and an 80-strong chorus from the local community, with performances from March 7-9.

The opera centres on an online gaming world used as a therapeutic tool in a care home. An elderly female resident uses the game to create her own avatar – and in the virtual world falls in love with the avatar of a teenage boy
