Those brave young men

MEET a contingent of recruits about to set off for the battlefields of World War One. The picture was brought in by David Winter of Lewes.

The railway station is at Cooksbridge.

The men are posing with railway staff to the rear and centre front.

Rouser rather likes the sight of the local labourer peering through the hedge. It lends a certain air to the snap.

According to Susan Rowland's The Gallant Men of Hamsey, 120 men from Hamsey, Cooksbridge and Offham signed up for the war. Thirteen never returned. Mary Mitchell of Hamsey House lost two sons as did the Sandells family.
