Three hundred call for speed cut

MORE than 300 people have signed a petition to cut the speed limit on a country lane near their homes.

Residents at Deanland Wood Park, near Ripe, are protesting against a 60mph speed limit which they say makes it dangerous for them to leave their estate by foot or car.

The petition, which has been compiled by three Chalvington and Ripe parish councillors, calls for a slower speed limit on Deanland Road.

Cllr Beryl Harper said: 'Quite a few near misses have been reported, especially equestrian and cycle users demand care when passing.

'However, the real worry as regards near misses is simple, as Deanland Road is part of the link between the A27 and A22.

'This is used as a rat-run, a frequent event if a blockage occurs on the A22.

'Lorries and speeding cars pay little heed to our exits.'

An estimated 600 people live in Deanland Wood Park and the majority of them are of retirement age.

The petition will be presented to East Sussex County Council on December 9.
