Tide is high in Newhaven
These photos were taken by Newhaven resident Stuart Barnard on Wednesday October 17 at around 1pm.
A high spring tide was rising in the town which caused the river to overflow in places.
According to Stuart, some areas were unable to be accessed and walkers and residents were turning back to avoid getting wet.
The Environment Agency issued a flood alert for Newhaven, as there was concern strong winds and the high spring tide could combine to cause surges.
A spring tide is caused when the moon is full or new and the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined.
At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low.
Spring tides are especially strong tides, but do not have anything to do with the season of spring.
They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line.
The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both contribute to the tides.
Spring tides occur during the full moon and the new moon.
