Public toilets in Polegate town centre are in danger of closing as the district council looks to save money.
Wealden District Council (WDC) are set to assess whether to close the amenity, which costs £7,000 a year to maintain.
The closure could come as early as October, but an alternative solution is being investigated.
The toilets in Polegate High Street are run and maintained by WDC. In 2008/9 the district council made a decision to close all public toilets and seek partners in running community toilet schemes.
A WDC spokesman said: “Polegate public toilets will be looked at as part of a long term programme of assessment which is taking place throughout the district - no dates have yet been fixed for an assessment. No changes will be made until a suitable Community Toilet Scheme is in place in Polegate.”
A town council spokesman said they had received lots of calls about the closure of the public toilets from concerned residents.
She said: “We have now been informed that the assessment is likely to take place in the next three months, with a possible closure of the toilets around October 2013 – April 2014.”
She added: “With imminent cuts and restrictions on raising the Town Council’s portion of the Council Tax, it is unlikely that Polegate Town Council will be able to fund the operation of the toilets. Refurbishment is expected to be in the region of £50,000 and annual operating costs at least £7,000.”
Community Toilet Schemes operate in the district including Hailsham.
