Hailsham was transformed into a winter wonderland when the town’s Christmas lights were switched on at the weekend.

The countdown to Christmas in Hailsham began in Vicarage Field on Saturday (November 30) with a repertoire of seasonal favourites performed by the Warbleton Brass Band.

Mika Riches, aged five, and Emily Cole, aged ten, switched on the Christmas tree and town centre lights after they were crowned joint winners of the Best Christmas Pizza Design competition organised by Hailsham Town Council and Dominos Pizza.

They were assisted by the Town Mayor councillor Jo Bentley and celebrity antiques expert Ian Towning, from Dickinson’s Real Deal, who was auctioning on behalf of Sussex Air Ambulance at its charity event in Hailsham that day.

Dominos staff added to the seasonal atmosphere in the town centre by handing out complimentary slices of pizza slices to the crowd.

Cllr Bentley said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is always a radiant affair which regularly attracts great crowds to the town centre.

“It’s all about bringing the community together to celebrate the countdown to Christmas with their friends and family. It was great to see people getting into the swing of things and I hope the festive lighting helps create an amazing atmosphere in Hailsham, giving pleasure to both residents and visitors to the town.

“Hailsham Town Council would like to thank Dominos Pizza for their assistance on the day and helping to organise the Best Christmas Pizza Design competition.

“There were some fantastic entries, including those submitted by Mika Riches and Emily Cole, who switched on the Christmas lights with me and will get to see their Christmas pizza made soon!”

Lucia Singh, from Dominos, added: “Myself and the Dominos Hailsham team were really pleased to get involved in this local event. The designs from the kids were great.

“Although we might not be able to make a pizza with both turkey and Christmas pudding on they were great fun and very inventive.

“It was a brilliant turn out on the night and we look forward to getting involved in future events in the town.”
