Traders’ concerns as repair work set to close road through Alfriston for seven weeks

Road works will mean Alfriston will be closed to through traffic from next week.
Almost two months of repair work to the main through road and its underlying water pipes is being carried out in the village by the county council.
But while many traders welcome the work they are worried about the affect the closure will have on business.
East Sussex County Council (ESCC) is set to replace the old and worn pipe beneath Alfriston High Street that drains the surface water from the road.
A total of 180 metres of pipe is being replaced between Star Lane and Dene Car Park.
The whole stretch of road will then be resurfaced.
The county council has held talks with the parish council, businesses and residents to identify the best time of year to carry out the work.
The start date has been confirmed as Monday February 18.
Cllr Carl Maynard, lead cabinet member for Transport and Environment at ESCC, said: “We’ve been working extremely closely with local people since last July to identify the best time of year to carry out these essential repairs and we’d like to thank everybody for their input.
“When the work is finished the road will look better and be much safer for drivers to use.
“But, while it takes place traffic delays are inevitable.
“We’re sorry for any disruption and suggest drivers allow extra time for their journeys.
“I’m pleased to say all businesses in the village will be open as usual.”
Alfriston Village will be completely closed to through traffic.
A diversion route has been set up for drivers.
Businesses will be open as usual.
Bev Lion, owner of Alfriston Village Stores in the heart of the village, said: “Everyone has got the same feeling; what effect will it have on the village, trade wise, we’ve already had the floods now with this on top it is not going to help things.
“We know it’s got to be done and I don’t think any time is a good time so we are worried what effect it will have on business.
“The sooner it’s done the better, though, then we won’t have to put up with any more repair work.”
The repairs and resurfacing are due to take seven weeks to complete – partly because there are several other pipes and wires in the ground that need to be worked around, said a ESCC spokesman.
He added: “We will do our best to give residents access to their homes and would encourage people to discuss any issues with staff on site.”
Residents should check with the bus company for alterations to the service.
