A YOUNG cancer survivor heading to university to train as a doctor after achieving top school grades during radiotherapy treatment is to be a model in a new campaign by charity, Cancer Research UK.

Student Camilla Hickish, agd 18, from Bodle Street Green, has been photographed for her image to appear in national newspapers, magazines, the London Underground and train stations including many around Sussex in a campaign launching this Monday, September 10.

The campaign will help launch a new identity for the national cancer charity and inspire people to raise funds with predicated rises in cancer cases in the future.

It is estimated that on average nearly five people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East every hour.

Miss Hickish said: “It’s thanks to research that I am still here.

“I am so grateful for the treatment that saved my life.

“Success stories like mine would not be possible without the work of Cancer Research UK.”

Miss Hickish will appear with others in a big multicoloured image of the ‘C’ at the start of the charity’s dynamic new logo.

With the rallying cry, ‘United we are stronger than cancer’, the campaign highlights the charity’s ambition to bring people together to break down cancer.

The bold ads urge the public to join the fight to help more people such as Miss Hickish survive cancer.

Camilla Hickish will be studying medicine at Bristol University after achieving ten straight A-star grades in her GCSE exams whilst still undergoing radiotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

She even took some of her exams in hospital so she could cope with the debilitating treatment.

The student also got three A grades in her A levels and she aims to qualify as a doctor and work in oncology – the branch of medicine devoted to cancer.

Last year the Sussex Express reported that Miss Hickish joined sailing world record holder Dame Ellen in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management ‘Round the Island Race’ at the Isle of Wight.

Cancer Research UK’s new ad campaign aims to reignite understanding and support for the charity’s life-saving work, and ultimately raise more money for research.

Lynn Daly, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman for Sussex, said: “We’re very grateful that Camilla is part of our new campaign.

“Every step we make towards beating cancer relies on every pound, every hour and every person.

“‘United we are stronger than cancer’ is our message because if we come together as a collective force to fight the disease – we can beat it.”
