Turning the clock back

MORE than 130 Hailsham residents got in the mood on Saturday night at a VE dance at the town's community hall.

Co-organiser Joy Bowdery, Hailsham Lions social team leader, said three-quarters of the guests wore authentic 1940s outfits.

She said: 'RAF and Army officers were popular but we had spivs and a Miss Marple lookalike as well.

'Fancy dress winners were the land girls.'

And she said Oxfam and the town's charity shops did a roaring trade in accessories.

Guests jitterbugged and jived the night away to music by the Johnny Spice Swing Band.
