Twelve-foot yellow python found in Hastings town centre

A 12-foot yellow python was found dead curled around a tree next to a town centre car park.

The slightly-nibbled carcass was stumbled upon by a resident who contacted Hastings Borough Council.

Environmental Community Officer Barry Lovell, who was called to the car park on Castle Hill Road at around 10.30am on Tuesday, said it was "very, very rare" that his team found anything as exotic.

Mr Lovell, who mostly deals with dog fouling, littering and fly posting, added: "We get the odd dead dog and roadkill. In the three years I've been here, the most extreme thing we've seen is one rather nasty dead deer.

"The snake had clearly been there for a little while."

He speculated the python, which was identified by the team after they disposed of it in a specialist landfill site in Canterbury, had been dumped by a bereaved pet-owner.

No pythons have been reported missing to either Hastings Police or the local RSPCA.
