Two ceremonies planned to mark the completion of Peacehaven war memorial

THE COMPLETION of the new War Memorial in Peacehaven will be celebrated with two ceremonies.

Members of the public are welcome to attend both events which will be held at the War Memorial in Meridian Park.

A topping out ceremony will take place on Friday October 12 at 2pm, where Peacehaven mayor Eileen Russell will unveil an information board that details the main sponsors, contractors and donators who have helped with and supported the construction of the memorial.

Then the Peacehaven and Telscombe branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a dedication ceremony at the memorial on Saturday October 13 at 11am.

A plaque will be unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, which names all the people from Peacehaven and Telscombe, who died in active service in the great wars.

Peacehaven Town Council has been building the memorial for the last six months.

The project has enjoyed generous support from a range of companies, organisations, sponsors and contractors and permissions from Lewes District Council.

The work to complete the construction of the war memorial will be completed at the end of September.

Councillor Robert Robertson, member of the town council’s war memorial sub committee and Peacehaven mayor Eileen Russell said: “We are thrilled that we finally have a memorial to honour the brave service men from Peacehaven and Telscombe who died on active service during the great war and really pleased that on 11 November all people from the two towns will have a larger, more open space to remember these brave servicemen.”

Town council clerk Kevin Kingston added: “We are extremely grateful for the all the help and support we have had from a range of  businesses  and organisations who have helped us construct this new war memorial and for the support of the local people and  businesses in the two towns for their generous contributions and donations.”

The council specifically thanked City College, Brighton for support in building the war memorial wall, Chandlers Building Supplies for materials, Colas Roads for lighting, Co Op Funeral Services for five memorial stones and a plaque and Lewes District Council for allowing the council to use Meridian Park.
