Uckfield business awards to be launched

More than 100 Uckfield Chamber of Commerce members attended a meeting at Crockstead Farm Hotel on January 29.

Committee member Adrian Corbin told members the Uckfield Business Awards is due to launch on February 26 at the East Sussex National Hotel .

There are 15 categories, from Business of the Year to Best New Business and Outstanding Achievement Award, and the winners will be announced in November.

President David Marshall, director at Dawson Hart solicitors, who welcomed members and guests, said the Chamber had responded to a consultation by Wealden Council on car parking. The main concern relayed to the council was the need to ensure that time allowed for parking in main car parks encouraged short stays near the High Street and longer stays further away.

He said: “We want to encourage commuters to use the station car park and limit their use of the main car park off the High Street and also the Bellbrook estate and nearby residential estates.” He reminded members a judicial review into the 7km Ashdown Forest no-development zone will take place soon.

Wealden is running two free surgeries (February 10 and 18 at the Civic Centre from 6-80pm) to help businesses expand within the scope of planning regulations. To find out more ring Louise Featherstone on 01892 602582.

Speaker Claire Duc described the Lewes and District Enterprise Expo 2014 at Lewes Town Hall on March 20. Other speakers included Martin Searle, development manager, Federation of Small Businesses in East Sussex, and Ken Black from NFU Mutual. Shirley Price appealed for ladies’ hats and bags for a fund-raising event being organised by the Friends of East Sussex Hospices and Jeff Holman from Uckfield Rotary Club told members about their ‘Making Dreams Come True 2014’ award in memory of Uckfield paratrooper Daniel Gamble who died in Afghanistan. It is open to 16-25 year olds.
