Uckfield chamber angered by 7km zone

Uckfield Chamber of Commerce is pressing Wealden Council for more information about a restriction on development within 7km of the Ashdown Forest.

A letter has been sent to the chief planning officer requesting an update on the rule brought in to protect the Ashdown Forest from increasing nitrogen deposition but which Chamber members say is stifling economic growth.

President David Marshall, from Dawson Hart solicitors, told members the restriction is of great concern to members in the construction industry but the negative effect went much further. He hoped to be able to pass on positive, helpful news at a later date.

About 75 people braved the snow to attend the meeting at the Wok Inn, Shortgate, on Tuesday, January 22.

Mr Marshall also said that County and the Uckfield Town Centre Steering Group want to brief members - in advance of a public exhibition - about plans being finalised to improve the town centre.

He urged members to register their interest online to deliver high-speed broadband on County’s website or direct on www.goesussex.co.uk.

Members heard an inter-chamber meeting was hosted by Uckfield Chamber at the Civic Centre on January 18 attended by representatives from East Sussex County Council and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership - a Government-sponsored body which has millions to invest in strategic economic growth for the region. Wealden MP Charles Hendry was also there.

The joint initiative aims to promote policies together which might be difficult if done alone.

Mr Marshall said: “Included in our ideas are superfast broadband, marketing - to promote East Sussex as the place to do business - and to develop links between business and schools and colleges.”

Six new members were welcomed to the Chamber including Challenge Packaging of Uckfield; Amuse Private Caterers, Uckfield; Marten Investments, Framfield; Kathy Gore, Framfield; P2P Global Solutions, Newick; B2B/B2C and Pivotal Moment Transition, Uckfield.

A talk was given by Steve Dockree from Square One Financial Planning LLP which focused on the business and corporate financial planning advice they offer, beginning at the launch of a company and following through to the preparation of exit strategies.

Robin Stevenson, of Swindells and Nick Holdcroft, of Horlock Holdcroft, invited Chamber members to a free advice drop-in session being organised in conjunction with Dawson Hart, solicitors, next month.
