A group of dancers from Uckfield have won first place in a prestigious competition.

‘Debs Dancers’ under thirteen years group won their dance section at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Dance Festival on Sunday, February 24.

They gained 87 marks and have now qualified to enter the All England Dance Festival in June this year.

The dancers who took part have only just started competing together as a team. They first worked together during this February half term.

As nine members of the aged ten to 12 group, they began improving and perfecting their dance piece called ‘Party’ in the autumn last year.

‘Debs Dancers’ senior troupe of 19 dancers, aged from 14 to 18, also won their section with a total of 89 marks and also qualify for the All England Dance Festival.

Based in Uckfield, The Deborah Lamb Theatre School aims to offer professional training in the performing arts including dance, drama and singing.

Now in its 23rd year, the group has many talented dance, singing and drama students. Starting as young as three years of age, students study the ISTD and RAD dance syllabi for grade and major examinations and the LAMDA and Guildhall Syllabi for speech, mime and drama.

Past students have gained places at London Studio Centre, Performers, Britts College, The Arts Educational school, Italia Conti School, LIPA, the Deborah Capon College, Preston College and Mountview.

‘Debs Dancers’ have performed in professional musicals and pantomimes in regional theatres and at Her Majesty’s Theatre and Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London,

The group also enjoyed the famous ‘Eulenfest’ celebrations in Quickborn, Germany, danced at Disneyland Paris and on board a Mediterranean cruise with MSCC.

The school hopes to inspire confidence in its students to help them develop their own strengths and welcomes the opportunity to showcase their talents to a wider audience.

Deborah Lamb said: “We are absolutely thrilled that these youngsters all did so well at Tunbridge Wells. It’s generally regarded as a tough one but we had no doubt they would all shine through.

“Now we hope they come home with awards from the All England Dance Festival, but what really matters is they get and give so much pleasure with what they do.”
