Maresfield Conservation Group, the registered charity dedicated to conserving the village and helping local residents, has launched a new, interactive website at: maresfieldconservationgroup.co.uk.

Designed in conjunction with Roothost of Lewes, organisers hope the new facility will greatly help the work of the village and increase the flow of information between members and those with an interest in where they live.

Officially launched at the annual winter dinner held at Marco Pierre White’s Chequers Inn in the village on January 4, group chairman Clive Wilson, said: “With 400 members, it is of crucial importance we provide constant information about the matters which affect our daily lives in the village and the interactive facilities of this site will also allow us to gather the views of our members on many topics.

“For example, the current building programme is a contentious issue and we must ensure residents are aware of the correct facts and options in order to form opinions.

“This amenity will be so helpful in many ways, it looks good and is very easy to navigate and we shall be expanding the content in the coming months as we become used to working in this new format.”

Packed with photographs, village history, diary dates, events, projects and information about the group and the executive committee, the website will be regularly updated to provide a comprehensive and relevant resource for all residents and friends of Maresfield.

The Group was founded in 1980 to prevent a household waste site being built at the Mill Pond Depot at the bottom of School Hill. It was successful in preventing this project and membership quickly grew from 50 to the present day 400.

Aims of the Group are to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment in Maresfield and the surrounding area.

Since 1990 projects have included planting daffodils along the village approach roads, providing flower tubs around the village centre, floodighting the church tower and restoring the clock and the Victorian street lamps on the recreation ground, by the School Hill cemetery and on the church wall by the Lych gate.

Traffic calming was installed on School Hill, Batts Bridge Road and Straight Half Mile and the Maresfield Traffic Plan was adopted. Public footpaths have also been improved and regular village clean-up days are organised.
