Woman fined for stealing cash from acquaintance

A CASH-CARD thief who stole £180 by forging an acquaintance's signature has been fined £200.

Sarah Geary, of Eversfield Place, St Leonards, pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation at Hastings Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Katie Gilham, who said she was left "angry and annoyed" by the theft of her card, had known Geary, 25, for a couple of months when the theft occurred on July 15 last year.

Prosecutor Jeremy King said: "Ms Gilham found that money had been drawn from her account at around 9.30am. The CCTV at Barclays showed Ms Geary signing a false name to obtain the money. After Ms Geary left the bank she gave the card and some of the money to her husband."

Nick Baskett, defending, said: "It was a very difficult time in her life. There was a degree of pressure from her partner to use the card."

Sentencing, chairman of the bench Alex Taylor told Geary she had been "fundamentally dishonest" before fining her 200 and handing down a one-year conditional discharge.
