After years of uncertainty, progress is now being made at lightning speed on Uckfield’s all-weather pitch.

Building work on land at Uckfield Community Technology College is now expected to start before Christmas and it should be ready by Easter next year.

News that the Football Foundation has made a £203,646 grant to boost campaigners’ coffers was greeted with enthusiasm by Wealden MP Charles Hendry.

He said: “I am delighted that the Foundation chose UCTC to be one of many deserving organisations that they are awarding grants to. I hope every student at the college will benefit from the new pitch and that the school will see many talented students representing their school and winning many games on this artificial grass pitch.”

The grant now tops up the £100,000 from Sports England’s Inspired Facilities fund and money from Uckfield Town Council, the College, East Sussex County Council, Uckfield Lions, the Grasshoppers Football Club and Uckfield Rugby Football Club.

Paul Thorogood, Football Foundation chief executive said: “I commend AWP4U and Sussex FA for working tirelessly to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future. This year is an exciting time for sport in this country and a tremendous opportunity to create a grassroots legacy. The FF is country’s largest sports charity with funding from the Premier League, the FA and the Government. It is dedicated to raising the standard of grassroots community sports.”

UCTC principal Hugh Hennebry said: The community has come together to create a lasting legacy to commemorate the 2012 Olympics. Uckfield will have a world class facility.”
