Working together to keep kids safer
THE Police Commander for the Wealden District has warned motorists to drive more carefully on the district’s roads now that the new school term has begun.
Roads across the region will be returning to the familiar rush hour scene as school children start their new classes in schools across the region.
Chief Inspector Richard Coates asked motorists to make safety a key priority to make sure youngsters are not in danger at any time.
Chief Inspector Coates told the Sussex Express: “Children will be returning to school over the coming days and I would ask that road users bear this in mind.
“There will be more traffic on our roads than we have seen for a number of weeks.
“There will also be new children attending schools for the first time.”
The Police Commander wanted drivers to show consideration to other motorists and youngsters in the months ahead.
He added: “I would urge all to bear this in mind and if driving near schools or residential areas keep your speed down and always be on the lookout for children who are walking on footpaths or verges.
“Always be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear which is a fundamental part of the highway code.
“Can I also remind parents not to park on zig zag lines outside schools as this is very dangerous.
“We need to work together to make sure our roads are safe.”
