Sussex Downs College is supporting Adult Learners’ Week 16-20 May by holding a series of free taster classes in Hailsham aimed at encouraging local people to make a change in their lives. This year is the 20th Anniversary of Adult Learners’ Week.
Hilary Morgan-Jones, Head of Employability Programmes said: “Informal taster sessions are a great way to encourage people to get involved in learning activities. Take for example, mature student Joan Ketley who was born in the years after the First World War.
“Joan wanted to learn how to use the internet so she could exchange emails with her grandson who lives in Australia. So she enrolled on a course at Sussex Downs College.”
As Joan said: “Not only did I want to keep up with family and friends via email I also want to search the internet for information. So much is now available on the web, such as recipes, which means I need to be online.
“My family bought me a laptop for Christmas which has spurred me on to come on the course and learn how to use it. I look forward to the class which has a friendly atmosphere. In fact three of my friends have also come along and we all help each other.”
Tutor John Saunders said: “On Monday 16 May, if you want to start learning again like Joan then there is a free Introduction to IT - Basic Computing taster class during the morning and during the afternoon Problem Solving IT, which is an opportunity to have your basic computing questions answered.”
These are just a couple of examples from the many exciting taster classes being offered during the week as part of Adult Learners’ Week in Hailsham. Other topics at Prospects House in George Street, include, approaches to psychology, card making, container gardening, creative patchwork, drawing for beginners, emergency first aid, French and Japanese for beginners, Italian for holidays, guided walks, sugar craft roses, zumba fitness session, workhouse history in Sussex and genealogy - who do you think you are?
Please note the zumba and emergency first aid take place in the Sports Hall at Hailsham Community College.
