A MAN has died from serious injuries after he collapsed in a road after a tragic incident in Hailsham.
The public order incident happened in Bramble Drive at 4.30pm yesterday, January 22.
Five young people aged between 13 and 26 were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and three for violent disorder. They remain in custody.
The 25-year-old victim was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital but he died at 7.20am this morning (January 23), despite efforts to save his life.
Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Riley from Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “This is a tragic incident and inviolved a number of young people.
“We are in the early stages of the investigation and are trying to establish the exact circumstances that lead up to the victim receiving theses fatal injuries.
“A police cordon remains at the scene whilst the investigation continues.”
Police could not confirm the cause of death or the identification of the dead man, at this time.
The Wealden District Police Commander, Chief Insp Richard Coates said his thoughts were with the family of the deceased.
He said: “Local officers are present in the area since yesterday and will continue to do so.
“I would urge the local community to please come forward with any worries and concerns they have and don’t hesitate to talk to our officers.
“This was an isolated incident involving people who were known to each other and I have no reason to believe that the local community are at any further risk.
“I have every faith that the people of Hailsham will come forward and assist detectives with their inquiries.”
