Man rescued from chalk pit in Lewes

Specialist fire crews were called out to rescue a man from a chalk pit near Lewes last night (Monday September 7).

The man was unharmed but needed rescuing after becoming stuck in the Malling Down chalk pit at around 5.13pm.

Rope rescue teams from Bexhill and Battle and the technical rescue unit were called to lift the man from the pit.

A fire engine from Lewes and two officers also attended the scene.
