THE LATIN AMERICAN defence sector is to be supplied with specialist ropes made by Marlow Ropes in Hailsham after a deal worth £300,000 was secured.
Help for the commercial deal was given by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) South East after they were approached by the Hailsham firm two years ago.
Lev Denker, an adviser with UKTI, worked with the rope firm’s sales director Richard Edge to review the firm’s overseas opportunities.
Richard Edge said: “At the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition last year at the Putra World Trade Centre, Marlow Ropes secured an exclusive deal to provide ropes to the Malaysian Fire Services.
“We then celebrated more success after exhibiting at Milipol, the French international exhibition of internal state security, where alongside repeat orders to supply ropes to the French Army, a new contract was signed with an Indian company, too.
“Our latest deal in South America is an incredibly exciting project and we would not have been able to secure it so quickly without UKTI.
“Help with translation services, legalities and support from UKTI officers in South America assisted us greatly.”
Marlow Ropes supplies ropes to 50 countries throughout the world using cutting edge technology.
The firm has become the official rope supplier to the RYA team GBR that will represent Great Britain in the 2012 games in Weymouth.
Dame Ellen MacArthur’s record breaking solo sailing campaigns has also been helped by her using running rigging supplied by the Hailsham-based company during the past five years.
Marlow Ropes operates from a new purpose-built factory and manufactures its quality British ropes on the same Hailsham site where ropes have been manufactured since 1807.
