A popular Heffle Court resident took a trip down memory lane as he spent an unforgettable evening as guest of honour at Mayfield Fire Station.
John Foster watched firemen do their evening drill practice, thanks to Sam Keylock who co-ordinates activities at the Heathfield home where John lives. John served within the fire service for 32 years in all, until he retired in 1987 as Senior Divisional commanding officer for B division.
Sam said: “John is passionate about his work as a fireman and often talks about it in our reminiscence sessions. I thought it would be lovely for him to see how the to see what life in the fire service looks like now and to relive the many happy years he spent there.’
Crews made the group feel very welcome, with two of them actually having worked under John when he was commanding officer. One is now retired working as community officer and the other is now the station officer at Mayfield.
John, whose son is also now a serving fireman, added: “I do miss being part of a crew and it was great to soak up the atmosphere again.” The memorable evening was finished off with a cup of tea, homemade cake and a good dose of friendly banter with the team.
