Nearly 100 people attended a public meeting on Wednesday to discuss the controversial proposed sale of the former St Anne’s School site in Lewes.
Local people have reacted with dismay to East Sussex County Council’s decision to sell the property and grounds of more than four acres to international spiritual group Subud. The meeting at Lewes Town Hall featured a panel answering questions from the public. It consisted of Martin Leeburn (Chair), David Anderson (Subud), East Sussex County Councillors Rosalyn St Pierre and Ruth O’Keeffe, Lewes Town Councillor Susan Murray and Pru Rowntree of Lewes Community Land Trust. There was no representative from the ESCC Executive.
A vote was taken on the following proposal: Does this meeting agree that the process for the sale of St Anne’s School was conducted fairly? Seven said yes, 37 said no and there were 19 abstentions.
