Mental health garden nursery saved in Hellingly

A CAMPAIGN to keep a garden nursery used by people with mental health struggles ended when an official ceremony took place for the NHS to hand over the facility to a community interest company.

New Road Nurseries in Hellingly provides a therapeutic setting for service users to recover through creative pursuits such as cultivating, harvesting and selling plants and vegetables.

But day services at the site were in danger of being scrapped by the NHS when funding was put in jeopardy – leading to a protest campaign by the nursery workers – until Care Co-ops, from Brighton, stepped in to save the site.

An official handover took place at the nursery on December 15.
