Crowborough has a newly extended and upgraded community fire station. The building was officially opened on Friday January 3 by the chairman of East Sussex Fire Authority, Cllr Phil Howson, following major extension and refurbishment.
The fire station was built on its current site in 1966. Subsequent improvements were made to ensure service to local communities was maintained at the highest standards.
Work on the extension and refurbishment started in November 2012, resulting in a total reconfiguration of the internal layout with the added benefit of a fully accessible community room. Funding to extend and refurbish the station was successfully secured in 2011 due to a change in the Government’s capital grant process.
The design of the station incorporates state-of-the-art energy efficiency systems that include solar panels for all hot water needs and Photo Voltaic (PV) panels for the generation of electricity. The station also has a built-in sprinkler system; in line with East Sussex Fire Authority’s commitment to installing sprinklers in all newly built and refurbished Fire Authority premises.
The community room has been dedicated to the memory of both Brian Wembridge and Alex Kent, two former Crowborough firefighters who tragically lost their lives whilst serving their communities. Their families were there to see the unveiling of a memorial plaque.
The opening ceremony commenced with Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Gary Ferrand, welcoming the guests, which included Councillors, staff and family and friends, to the newly finished station.Following the opening ceremony, Councillor’s and guests were given a guided tour.
Station manager of Crowborough community fire station, Pup Upton, said: “The station has been totally transformed, it clearly demonstrates East Sussex Fire Authority’s commitment to providing a first class service to the communities of East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.
“The addition of a new fully accessible community room will no doubt prove to be a valuable community asset for years to come.
“The community room is available to local community groups to meet and use the facilities that include disabled car parking, fully accessible toilet with baby change and a self-contained kitchenette, all located on the ground floor.”
