Newhaven Fort will reopen on Friday March 1 after its winter break.

The award-winning attraction has received a glowing assessment from the annual Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme (VAQAS), endorsed by Visit England.

The fort opens from 10.30am-6pm daily, offering visitors the chance to enjoy interactive wartime displays and exhibits, fascinating architecture and breathtaking cliff top views of the Sussex coastline.

Throughout 2013 Newhaven Fort will host a busy programme of popular events, from open air theatre and live music to military re-enactments and children’s activities.

The first event of the season is on Sunday March 10 when Newhaven Fort will present a set of short talks about inspiring women and the roles they played in times of conflict, in recognition of International Women’s Day.

Talks will cover the careers of nurses Edith Cavell, Nellie Spindler, Mairi Chisholm & Elsie Knocker, as well as the work of the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) in World War Two.

Later in March there’s the chance to join special guided tours and find the answers to those questions you’ve always wanted to ask about the fort.

Tours will be on March 16 and March 23 at 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Places can be booked in advance by calling Newhaven Fort on 01273 517622.

The fort will stay open until November 3.

It is owned and operated by Lewes District Council which is currently putting a long term lease of the sort out to tender.
