THE LAST event of the year helped RNLI Newhaven fundraisers exceed their target of £30,000 for 2012.

A Christmas Fair held at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven on Saturday November 26 generated more than £1,000.

The festive fair was very well attended and included a visit from Newhaven mayor Steve Saunders.

Fundraising committee chairman Alan Dempster said: “It was one of the best in our programme of fundraising events.

“It is due to the efforts and generosity of the local people which sees the volunteer lifeboat crew return so many of our loved ones to safety.”

To date this year the lifeboat has been launched to assist in 55 rescues and it has proved to be one of the busiest in ten years.

The lifeboat shop, based at the Boathouse and run by volunteers, continues to strive to open seven days a week to sell souvenirs and gifts.

The fundraisers will be looking forward to starting next year’s events, beginning with Slurp Our Soup on Friday January 27, 2012 from 11.30am to 1.30pm at the Boathouse on Riverside, West Quay, as part of the National Lifeboat Fundraising SOS Day.
