NEWICK doctor Herry Ashby is getting in a lather to raise funds for Help for Heroes – he is having the beard he has sported for 40 years shaved off.

The GP is inviting people to make donations to the cause as he awaits the razor.

The beard first appeared in 1971 en-route to Africa after he left school. His wife has never seen him unshaven.

This life-changing event will take place with the assistance of the ladies at Sharon Wilson’s hair salon in Newick at 11am on Friday, May 20.

Dr Ashby said: “As news rolls in remorselessly of our courageous servicemen and women being killed or seriously wounded, I feel all of us should try to help them as best we can.

“This is a small way of demonstrating our continuing support. I am particularly aware of this as our own son-in-law has served in the Army in recent years in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

“So I do hope people will respond generously to my modest gesture.”

Donations can be made directly to collection boxes sited around Newick and also within Newick and Chailey GP surgeries.

Alternatively they can be made by cheque payable to Help for Heroes and posted to H4H, Unit 6, Aspire Business Centre, Ordnance Road, Tidworth, Hants SP9 7QD; by phone at 01980 846 459 or online at www.helpforheroes.org.uk/donations
