Newick’s neighbourhood plan was given the seal of approval at a referendum on Thursday February 26.

Lewes District Council will adopt the plan prepared by Newick Parish Council.

The voting was 846 in favour, 102 against with one abstention. Turnout was 49 per cent - amongst the highest in the country.

The plan took more than two and a half years to put together and residents were involved throughout.

Residents were asked where 100 homes should be built in the village. The plan is a blueprint for how villagers would like Newick to develop.

The district council must use the plan’s policies when considering planning applications.

Chairman of Newick Parish Council John Lucas said: “I have been delighted with the enthusiasm and support we have received from the residents of Newick in formulating the parish’s Neighbourhood Plan and now for the large vote given in its favour.”
