Barcombe’s bonfire celebrations will not go ahead this year if the society cannot find a new chairperson.

The society is also on the hunt for a new vice chair, treasurer and fundraising secretary to enable the popular annual event to go ahead in 2016.

Charlie Deacon, Barcombe Bonfire Society member, said: “We are looking for someone who is passionate about bonfire, is organised and committed. It requires a year round commitment with monthly meetings and fundraising events throughout the year.

“No necessary experience is required. We did really well the past two years with a brand new chairman from the outside. There is plenty of bonfire knowledge in other members to be shared. In fact, the work always falls to the same core of people, so it would be nice to get some fresh faces and ideas.

“Barcombe Bonfire has been going since the 30s and only war and severe weather has stopped it. It would be a massive shame to see such a well-loved finale to the bonfire season come to an end due to lack of support.

“Barcombe is held in high esteem among many in the bonfire community as the feather in the hat of each season and the village would be far poorer without it. I think it would be hard to get momentum going again if we were to take a hiatus. The Barcombe Players amateur dramatics group faced a similar fate and never got back on its feet.”

The society is also looking for a site to relocate their storage and preparation shed, although have assured no explosives will be stored on site.

Anybody who can help is asked to attend the EGM on March 1 at 8pm in the Royal Oak Room. Contact Charlie Deacon on 07769596045 or charles.a.deacon@gmail.com for more information.
