LEWES is expecting a large number of visitors when the Olympic Torch Relay comes to the town on Tuesday, July 17 which means good news for local businesses.
The unique occasion has caught the public imagination, with nine Torchbearers carrying the flame through the streets – including former daredevil stuntman Eddie Kidd.
Nilam Popat, Corporate Head of Communities and Enterprise at Lewes District Council, said: “It will be an honour to welcome the Torch Relay to Lewes and the local community has been very supportive of the event. It is a good opportunity for people to come together and celebrate and we will be cheering on the Torchbearers as they carry the flame through Lewes.
“I hope visitors will spend the rest of the day in the town and frequent the various independent shops and the wide range of restaurants and bars to make it a real day out.”
The torch convoy is due to arrive at the outskirts of the town at 2.14pm. The exact relay route can be found at www.lewes.gov.uk/celebrating2012
Spectators will be able to watch the relay anywhere along the designated route, from the Phoenix Causeway along the High Street and Western Road.
The Olympic flame is scheduled to leave Lewes at 2.45pm from Brighton Road and on to the A27. It will then visit Eastbourne.
People who are planning to travel to Lewes on the day should be aware that road closures will be in place from 1pm onwards. The road closures are indicated on the www.lewes.gov.uk/celebrating2012 website.
On-street parking along the direct torch route will be suspended to ensure that the public gets the best view possible and to make space for the relay convoy as it travels through Lewes.
Visitors are advised to get to the town in good time, well in advance of the spectacle.
Limited coach parking is available at Brook Street car park, which has been reserved for coaches only on the day.
Spaces for coaches must be pre-booked and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. There is no parking charge. To book a space please contact the district council’s Civic Officer on 01273 484112.
