A new larger community centre could be built in Hellingly to help cater for new housing developments in the area.
The community hall, proposed for land at The Drive, was granted planning permission in 2010 as part of an agreement to build houses at the former Hellingly Hospital site.
Now Hellingly Parish Council has submitted another planning application to Wealden District Council, seeking to expand the floor space of the proposed community hall, to serve residents at the recently approved development of 460 new homes in the north of Hailsham.
The controversial development in Hailsham gave permission for developer The Fairfield Partnership to build homes, a new primary school, and 300 metres of retail space on land south of New Road and east of Park Road.
The application for the homes, agreed in July, was part of the district council’s Strategic Sites Local Plan which will see 4,525 homes built on land across Wealden to meet housing targets by 2027.
The planning application states the proposed community hall will be in a large area of parkland in the middle of the Hellingly Hospital development and aims to be ‘accessible to those from within the new development and those travelling from further afield’.The hall would have space for parking.
The interior would comprise an 18m by 10m hall for flexible use, with internal storage. There would also be an office for a centre manager, a kitchen facility linked into the main hall, and a 10m by 7.5m community room with the capacity to house a creche of up to 30 children aged between two and five years old.
The applicant states that it wanted the building to ‘relate’ to its parkland setting and and inspiration for its design was taken from Barcombe Village Hall.
The planning application said: “There are two entrances to the building, both from the main vehicular approach to the north of the site. To the south, the building is intended to open up into the surrounding parkland.
“An area of outdoor play has been proposed to the area of the community rooms to accommodate potential creche requirements, including a dedicated, integral external store for outdoor playequipment.”
The closing date for comments on the application is December 20. You can find out more by visiting Wealden District Council’s website and searching for application number WD/2013/2239/F.
