Sussex Police has issued a warning for Wealden residents to be on their guard against council cax scams.

Officers believe fraudsters are phoning residents and asking for bank details in order to give them a refund on their council tax.

A police spokesperson said: “Once again, it appears unscrupulous individuals are phoning Wealden residents pretending to make enquiries about council tax and asking for bank account details.

“The fake callers claim to be from the council and are offering a council tax refund. They then ask for bank details in order to pay in the ‘refund’.

“Wealden District Council will never make an unarranged phone call to ask for your bank details.

“Please never give out information about your bank account over the phone unless you are absolutely sure who you are talking to.

“If you have any concerns, please contact WDC on 01323 443322 or report the matter to police by calling 101 or emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.”
