Police warn people to watch out for bogus tradesmen

CROWBOROUGH Police are warning residents to watch out for unidentified people who call at their homes after two men were seen acting suspiciously in the town.

They describe how two men called at a house in Beacon Gardens on Tuesday (August 7) at around 10.45am and offered to do some gardening work for the elderly woman who lives there. It is believed they were trying to distract the woman in order to gain access to her house, but she was suspicious and thankfully nothing was stolen.

One of the men is described as in his 30s, of medium height and medium build with dark hair and wearing a navy blue suit. The other is described as white in his 50s, tall and burly with a dark, tanned complexion and looked scruffy.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious should contact police on: 101 quoting serial 0461 of 07/08.

They advise people not to open the door if you are not sure who is there. Check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are purporting to be from i.e. police, council or gas, electricity, water companies. Use telephone numbers listed in the local directory or provided independently by your service provider. Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller, as they may be bogus.

They say many utility service providers like gas, electricity and water provide password schemes for customers and advise people to sign up. When unannounced callers claiming to be from these utility providers call at your door they should know the password if they are genuine.

They also warn: Don’t keep large quantities of cash at home, put it in the bank where it is safe. Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times. Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, you close the door behind them - distraction burglars often work in teams where one will distract you whilst others sneak in through the insecure door. If somebody asks for your help (ie needs to make a telephone call, needs a drink or pen and paper) refer them to a neighbour, help them through a closed door or call a friend to come and help. If you suspect a bogus caller is at your door call the police on 999 immediately.
