Plans to build the first phase of the new port access road to Newhaven Eastside were submitted to Lewes District Council this week.
The application includes a footpath/cycleway and associated works for Newhaven Development LLP.
Avalon Newhaven LLP is working with Barratt Homes and ASDA to develop the Eastside site, bringing together residential, retail and commercial elements.
The aim is to ‘deliver a complete mixed-use development on the site that meets the needs of Newhaven now and in the future, and which will make a positive contribution to the economic and social vitality of the area’.
An outline application has already been approved for 190 dwellings and 1,860 sqm of class B1 employment floorspace, supported by car parking and open space.
The scheme would include access roads, a 6,780 sqm retail foodstore, petrol filling station, parking spaces, service area and associated landscaping.
Last week the Sussex Express reported work had started on the first part of the access road.
A spokesperson for East Sussex County Council said: “There are two parts to the Newhaven Port access road.
“The first will serve a housing development due to be built and the developer has started preliminary work on this.
“The second section of the road, which will serve the outer harbour, is currently being designed by the county council, and we currently have funding allocated in our capital programme towards it.”
